The Geographic Names Committee suggested all of Banjup north of Armadale Road should fall under a proposed locality called Treeby, named after two Cockburn pioneers.
On Thursday, councillors reiterated their commitment to a decision made in August that would mean splitting Banjup’s north into a new suburb bounded by Armadale Road to the south, Jandakot Road to the north, Warton Road to the east and Solomon Road to the west.
The rest of Banjup to the north of Jandakot Road and east of Fraser Road would then be included in the suburb of Jandakot.
Councillor Steve Portelli argued the City should continue to support its previous decision.
“Treeby as originally proposed will be residential with public open space and a nature reserve bounded by Armadale Road to the south and Jandakot Road to the north,” he said.
“The area north of Jandakot Road is never likely to be re-zoned to accommodate further residential development and will continue to be used as a buffer to Jandakot Airport.”
The new suburb will be named after Joseph and Emma Treeby, who settled in the area in the 1890s.
